Ah, I've developed the horribe habit of starting far too many books at one
time and jumping around from place to place. It might just be a better idea
to take a look at the lovely Jefferson County Library Website and pull up
exactly what I have out right now to respond to this particular question.
Othello / 822.33T7 SHAKESPEARE -- Ah, yes. Good ol' AP English. Still have
to return this one, as we've moved on to Hamlet now.
Of Time and the River / FICTION (Thomas) WOLFE -- O God! _Look Homeward,
Angel_ was stunning in every way. Yes, yes. I'll admit it. I read Wolfe
because I heard he influenced Kerouac to such a great extent. But the
prose... it's heartbreakingly beautiful.
The Portable Blake / 821.7 BLAKE -- Yet another Beat motivated this
particular read. Just as Ginsberg did, I'm hoping for mad, hysterical
visions of Blake.
The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test / 306.1 (Tom) WOLFE -- And as long as I
speak of visions of Blake, how about Visions of Cody? A read of One Flew
Over the Cuckoo's Nest and some of Neal's letters motivated me to pick up my
first Tom Wolfe. It's brilliant. Next, hernia herNIa.
Invisible Monsters / FICTION PALAHNIUK -- To add to the Fight Club
discussion, I'm really enjoying Palahniuk's take on postmodern society.
Gripping stuff.
Mythology / 292.13 HAMILTON -- Combatting the anti-mythological views that I
faced in the private Christian school I previously attended by becoming
somewhat literate regarding classical mythology.
Rimbaud Complete / 841.8 RIMBAUD -- I am in total awe of Rimbaud.
Duino Elegies / 831.912 RILKE -- My first Rilke as well. I think the
particular translation that I have -- which divides things up into W.C.
Williams-esque lines -- is really helping my level of understanding.
Curious to check out some other additions.
Licks of Love / FICTION UPDIKE -- After finishing the Rabbit tetralogy, I
was heartbroken. Couldn't there be more of the Angstrom family? Indeed
there was. From one of our greatest short story writers comes a new volume
of short stories. I'm adoring it.
Dubliners / FICTION JOYCE -- Finished Portrait of the Artist and working on
this one to try my hand at Joyce before my attempted read of Ulysses over
the winter break. From what I've heard, however, it'll likely be over the
summer break, too.
A Separate Peace / YA FICTION KNOWLES -- Just picked this up today. We'll
see.
To add some more fodder for conversation, what type of music do the rest of
you bananafish listen to? To give you an idea, a rather short list of what
I like follows:
Air, Tori Amos, The Ataris, Joan Baez, The Beatles, The Boomtown Rats, BT,
Kate Bush, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Ani Difranco, DJ Shadow, Thomas Dolby,
Bob Dylan, Genesis, godspeed you black emperor!, Hybrid, The Icicle Works,
Joy Division, Kraftwerk, Led Zeppelin, New Order, Mike Oldfield, Orbital,
Pink Floyd, Portishead, The Psychedelic Furs, Radiohead, The Ramones, Lou
Reed, Buffy Sainte-Marie, The Sex Pistols, Sigur Ros, Patti Smith, The
Smiths, Sonic Sum, The Strokes, The Talking Heads, Tenacious D, The Velvet
Underground, Dar Williams, and The Who. I've also started getting into some
jazz. Just dipping my foot in, but I'm quite fond of Miles Davis, Ella
Fitzgerald, and Stan Getz currently.
Hope that this bookish and rather alienated high school student's list
didn't bother you too much. Really, I'm just looking for ways to expand my
horizons regarding music and reading, and I know that you bananafish get
along swimmingly (sorry!) with good literature and good music. Thanks in
advance for your help!
