Only two things I can say in Derrida's defence:
1. Everything we read of his -- at least the major texts -- are translations
from French to English.
2. He was a philosopher of language critiquing the use of language in the
west. John mentioned this earlier -- his writing is an attempt to undo (a
little bit) what he saw as harmful tendencies in our language and at the same
time to demonstrate, playfully, that language isn't a stable thing.
So he screws with us when we read him, but that's part of the point he's
making.
This is largely true of his earlier texts.
