I can understand Null's response to the challange that Salinger's prohibitions throw down. My own response is to suggest we all leave the man strictly alone. Stop pondering what he might be up to...what he might be thinking...what he might look like now...what gems might be lying in that strong room in the basement...all the rest of those curiosities which only encourage the man in his vanity. I'm quite sure he opens up his mail box to read our contributions each morning with eager, trembling hands. The one way to draw him out of his seclusion - if that's really what you want - is to ignore him for a year. He would find it unbearable. All he could do then would be to emerge into the daylight to remind us of his absence. Scottie B.
