After reading the gentleman's e-mail again and visiting his page, I think the latest responses to this are really missing the point. It almost sounds like a wind-up doll that says "The man is entitled to his privacy" repetedly. Actually, what the fellow had to say has nothing whatsoever to do with Salinger's privacy, or respect for him, or an attempt to contact him or bring him out of seclusion--it just has to do with his right to quote from the book for academic purposes. And he's right, he CAN do this, and why not. He's right on, IMO.
