Coincidentally Soul Asylum singer's ex-girlfriend, actress Winona Ryder, is
one of the entertainment world's most reknown Salinger fans, to the point
where she fired off an angry letter to Ian Hamilton about snooping around
in Salinger's business, paid thousands of dollars for a letter with his
signature on it, then sent it to Salinger because she felt guilty about
sinking down to Hamilton's level. Twenty or so years ago she would have
made a perfect Phoebe.
Entertainment story two: when actor Nicholas Cage proposed to actress
Patricia Arquette, she sent him on a scavenger hunt for impossible items
before she'd let him marry her. Amongst the items were a black orchid and
JD Salinger's autograph. To cut a long story short he bought one in an
auction for a couple of thousand dollars. The orchid he just spray painted.
But the story ended happily as now they are not only married but proud
owners of said autograph (:
