Jim said that Tory said:
<< I was looking through a collection of "Great American Short-Stories
of the 20th Century" today, edited by Updike, and no Salinger stories
were present.
oh well... >>
And then Jim Said:
<<Oh yeah, I remember looking through the anthology specifically for
that purpose, and being a peed off at Updike for that omission...
only time I've been seriously disappointed in the guy. >>
If the book in question is The Best American Short Stories of the
Century, edited by John Updike and coedited by Katrina Kenison, I own
it. Despite the Disappointing Omission, I really like it. But if
you're talking about being "seriously disappointed" or "peed off" at
John Updike, what makes matters worse is that not only did he overlook
some worthy stories, but he included one of his own! Talk about patting
yourself on the back! I can only hope Katrina Kenison forced him to
include it or something. It's not a bad story ("Gesturing" from
Playboy, 1980), but come on! Calling your own work one of the Best
American Short Stories of the Century?!

(have you read In the Beauty of the Lilies?)
