Now, this was good, Matt. It's almost like reading RHTRBC through the deaf mute character. Now, what happens when you leave that character out?
Yes, they are looking for Seymour, but what comes through, by and large, is judgment. Judgment on Seymour, usually within the context of what's "acceptable" excellence, intelligence without sensitivity, an intelligence largely exemplified by Muriel's mother. It stays withing bounds because it never seeks to look beyond them.
Buddy seem caught between not wanting to suffer judgment himself, and wanting to defend Seymour. He gives in to the latter at the end.
