But despite being in that class I really feel like
being in this discussion group is a bit like the
neighborhood girl getting in
and playing basketball with the big boys.

I know how you feel, and if I were you, i wouldn't worry too much about it.
I've often felt the same way here, but you'll get over it.

I often worry that some of the younger list members get scared away by the
antics of those of us who Should Know Better. And truly, my post earlier
today was not meant to make anyone uncomfortable about their general lack of
anything. Rather, I meant to convince young Becky, and perhaps other list
members, that attention to detail is so very important.
I've played the clarinet for most of my life. When I was young, I was the
most talented member of our (very small) band. As I got older and went to
high school, I found myself in a sea of people who were (gasp!) More
Talented than I. College? Even worse. I was crushed. I was angered. And I
Got Better. Simply sitting next to one who was better than I gave me an
opportunity to observe what that person did Right, or, though I hated to
admit it, what I was doing Wrong.
You see, only when one is exposed to better things does one understand the
current state of mediocrity. And yes, this list houses a basketball team of
very Big Boys who don't hesitate to play dirty at times. You may find
yourself a little afraid of them at times. But boy, will you learn from
them. I can almost guarantee it.
Regards,
Cecilia.
