    Hello friends,

Well, unless Jim and Elizabeth have got their laptops plugged in
at Starbucks, it looks like I am going to get in the first word
    about our NYC meeting.

Perhaps someone could write a story, about long-distance correspondence
relationships ending in face to face meeting. A story, with love,
disenchanment, surprise, regret... even squalor (I believe, quite a few
people have already written such stories, Malamud in "The Magic Barrel"
has one, I think). However, that would not be about us.

Rather picture me in black raincoat and fedora stalking aimlessly around
Penn Station only to find a mysterious stranger standing against a column
holding prominently a copy of F&Z (with the white cover) and - I am
not making this up - a banana. Of course Beth was only mysterious until
I introduced myself, and by the time we walked over to where Jim was
standing I had convinced myself that all you bananafish must be even more
charming in real life than as evanescent pixels (I really don't know what
evanescent means, but it *sounds* like the word I want) if Ms. R. is
    any example.

We had a nice chat, about our involvement with the list, private lives,
and the names of some of our fellow list-members with whom we had
kept up off-line relationships came up, mixing desire and regret, but
there was no gossip and no Salinger related discussion, so I guess I
will have to mark this meeting's subject line with "OT".

I had to get back to work and see what all those piled up
while-you-were-outs were all about, but Jim and Elizabeth proceded in the
direction of Starbucks and perhaps spent the rest of time commenting
about how middle aged men tend to put on a little weight and would look
better without gray beards - or perhaps they talked about you.

    all the best,
    Mattis
