I agree, although so many people disagree. The truth is I can understand why
people feel that way, to an extent. I mean if all you ever heard was Smells
Like Teen Spirit, or if you never even heard that and just heard this guy
was a drugged up "grunger" who killed himself and made loud music, I can
understand why people might not understand. But when you look a bit deeper
at his music, his life, what becomes clear is that Kurt Cobain really was a
genius. The press was all wrong on him. So much of his music is just
beautiful in a way that is hard to beat: it's honest, and to an extent very
few artists ever reach. Some of it was harsh and abrasive, some was just
fun, some was sad, some was soft and beautiful, but all of it was honest,
all of it is pure emotion. The extent of difference says nothing other than
that if we are honest, and that means everyone, and allow ourselves to
experience all extremes of emotion, that we are complex, much more than most
people will ever admit. He really was an artist in that I think he was able
to create things that really show that. He was incredibly sensitive, too, I
mean in life he really was a quite person, and he didn't really want to be
famous, I think part of him did, but the other part didn't because being
famous meant having people who don't know you and have only heard one song
saying they love you, when in fact they were the same ones who beat him up
in high school. I think it's hard for a person like him to deal with that,
but I don't intend to get into the too often opened question of why he
killed himself. I don't know, and I can't know. To relate this to Salinger,
I must say that he reminds me of Seymour from time to time, not entirely,
not just the whole suicide thing, but in lots of ways they are similar. I
bet a whole bunch of people will get mad at me for saying that, but please
don't get too mad if you don't really know much about kurt.
