Mr. Bowman, I agree with much of your post - F&Z has never sat very well with me, not because of my inability or lack of desire to identify with any particular members of the Glass family, but because I find it - not exclusively - somewhat manipulative. I wonder, though. For someone who in his youth believed he was every bit as sensitive and dedicated as the Glass children, do you think that during the two decades your volume remained unopened that you, rather than the text and setting of the story, may have changed? I don't believe it is possible for anyone to grow out of sensitivity...the crap just piles up. I've read that story of the man discovering rotting carcasses from his past. Hemingway, wasn't it?
