phonies

i seem to recall a segment of Catcher in which Holden complains about
seeing people who he hasn't been close to in the past and being forced to
engage in a conversation with them. at least, i'm sure that's the
scenario. (haven't read it in awhile, to be honest)

anyway, an interesting scenario last night. walked down to my dorm front
lobby and ran into a guy i went to high school with...one whom i never
particularly cared for. (in all actuality it was the clique that he
belonged to that probably kept us from becoming acquaintances) he sees me,
does a double take, and says "hi." he even started a conversation with me.
now, this has happened before with other people i know, but most of those
conversations are obviously forced attempts to be polite and phony for the
sake of politeness and phoniness, but for some reason he didn't seem phony
or phonily polite to me. we actually got along fairly well, better than if
we had run into each other in high school when we were still tied down by
our attitudes and such.

i suppose this just goes to show that people can change, and perhaps if
holden had approached these people with a positive attitude he might not
have been met with phoniness. is that too hard to understand?
