Subject: to cap it all

Some time in the early 60s I went to a terrific party
at which we were invited to attend, not in full fancy dress,
but wearing just the head gear of some favourite figure.
My buddy went as Oberstgeneral Erwin Rommel (against
whom he had at one time driven a Cromwell tank in the
French bocage); & I went as You-Know-Who.
But what was an American 'hunting' cap? After some
research, my brill wife constructed for me a brill thing
in brill vermilion - which was an absolute succes fou
on the night. What it approximated to, though, was
the item the blokes in the photographs were wearing
as they posed with one foot on their dead elks - nothing
like a 'baseball' cap.
Were we wrong? Surely they're different looking yokes,
whichever way the peak is pointing?
(Incidentally, the evolutionary theorist Richard Dawkins
has pointed out that for a non-American to wear a baseball
cap reduces his IQ by roughly 10 points - &, when worn
back to front, by a further 20.)
