End Zone is a book I read in l976 and still smile when I think of
you are about to...it might seem a bit contrived since we aren't in
a cold war with nuclear idiots these days, but the football stuff
is still true!
also, you picked up an elizabeth thread about scholarship and salinger--I
can attest the tension is there--what salinger teaches will invariably not
fit if you give it back in a thesis--but what he gives the scholar is so
vast and wonderful, it can at least be like a liferaft in an often
drowning sea...I don't think I could have done a dissertation on anyone
else despite the paradox. will
