Paul's inclusion of Shakespeare on the list of favorites deserves some
support. No other writer's work has lasted so long with such poetic and
social relevance. Sure, others have lasted in the canon as long or longer
(Chaucer, the Bible, etc.), but none have the visceral, implosive beauty of
the bard. Beyond all section-man explorations of the "deeper" meaning of
Shakespeare, there floats on the surface, like lillies in a green pond, the
beauty of the rhythm of his language (and whether or not Christopher Marlowe
wrote some of it doesn't really matter in the long run).
Pick any from among the thousands of worthy quotes, and it's easy to
see why Shakespeare is beloved. It's nice to think that maybe 100 years from
now, someone will read the following and be so stirred:
"I have scars on my hands from touching certain people. Certain
heads, certain colors and textures of human hair leave permanent marks on me.
Other things, too. Charlotte once ran away from me, outside the studio, and I
grabbed her dress to stop her, to keep her near me. A yellow cotton dress I
loved because it was too long for her. I still have a lemon-yellow mark on
the palm of my right hand."
