In the city, try the Strand, at Broadway and 12th. They advertise
"Eight Miles of Books" and they have a good rare-book collection, and
even occasionally have a decent, if slightly overpriced, non-Catcher
Salinger in the rare-book room. (I've never seen a rare copy of
Catcher there.)

Once, that whole area was only bookstores. There are few left. Gotham
(once a Salinger hangout) is uptown and still in business. West 18th
St., just off Fifth Avenue, has a couple of interesting used-book places.

And if you are in driving distance of Montclair, NJ, try the Montclair
Book Center. Mostly used books, a small selection of new titles, and a
good atmosphere.

I have a file of used bookstores north of NYC, but it is so efficiently
filed away, I can't put my hands on it right now.
