I don't remember if I responded to this or not, but... Jeremy Bentham's utilitarianism originally established as a goal for behavior "the greatest possible good for the greatest number of people," the greatest good being measured in units of pleasure, and the opposite measure in units of pain or displeasure. His critics accused him of propogating what they called a "pig philosophy," being pleasure centered and ignoring a human being's higher faculties. John Stuart Mill, the next generation of utilitarians, found it necessary to distinguish between the pleasures appropriate to a human being and the pleasures appropriate to a pig, thus between bestial pleasures and other kinds. This along the lines of what you were thinking of? The actual phrase, "pearls before swine," was from the teachings of Christ.
