Perhaps, but consider the fact that he was writing specifically and entirely for a cutesy Readers Digesty audience. Within the constraints of what is a pretty darn restrictive and inherently corny genre, he manages to force quite a lot of individuality and cleverness. I think this has to be kept in mind when reading *any* of his magazine stories - he's not writing for us or even the readers of Catcher, but the Muriels and Sally Hayeses of the world. And, like I said earlier, it's quite amazing to see some of his later themes emerge even at this early stage (I was referring in particular to `The Heart of A Broken Story' - which is a pretty nice, simple rebellion against the sort of tripe a magazine hack is expected to pump out).
