Sorry about that Meredith :) First off, it's too bad your teacher forgot the direction she gave you. But I'm pretty sure she's spoken to so many students about their papers in the last couple months she can't remember what she said to whom. And beyond that, I'd bet any amount of money that what she said about your paper was right :) But that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you or your ideas. You just have to organize them. What I would do if I were you is take some colored highlighters and highlight the sentences that all have to do with the same subject by color. Sentences about zen, say, highlight in red. Sentences about Salinger's experiences, highlight in blue. And so on. Then take everything that's the same color and put it in ONE paragraph :) Then take a step back and ask, What am I trying to prove? Why am I including this information?
