>DeDaumier, garbage or brilliant? I've read both takes and have always been on the fence myself. > I'll tell you that this was never one of my favorites. One day last summer I decided to give old DeDaumier Smith another reading, and I had a really good time with it, for the first time really. I immediately came home and wrote my best Salinger friend that I had a big breakthrough with the story. He said it was never one of his favorites either, but that he would give it another shot. His next shot didn't do it for him either. Maybe if you read it every once in a while, it will hit you over the head like a ton of bricks someday. Then again it may be one of those things that you remain firmly on the fence about forever. It certainly took me by surprise when i enjoyed it so thoroughly the last time.
