Heh... I think Freud is a Terrible hero to have :) There's a good reason why no one is doing straight-up Freudian psychoanalysis these days, and that's probably because there's more to being human than sex and death. But that's my opinion. I have a friend who tends to see the best in everyone, and he's been doing it to a fault and to my chargrin for 16 years now. But at the same time, he brings out the best in people. I've even heard of odd studies done in college Writing Centers to this point. One group of students would get nothing but praise for their writing (only their strengths highlighted). Another would only have their weaknesses criticized. Another group would get mixed critiques. The group of students whose writing improved the most was the "praise only" group. I have NO IDEA how they evaluated the work or conducted the study, but I found it interesting. I haven't tried it myself. My experience with other listserves has been varied as has been yours. But what's interesting is that all the listserves you mentioned had to do with writers of some merit. My wife has subscribed to listserves to Keanu Reaves and the owners of rabbits for pets. The writing in posts sent to those listserves wasn't quite up to the writing sent to other literary listserves I've been subscribed to.
