I love that part too! I think they are actually in the hall. He  has
left the bathroom and is hurrying to dress when he collides with his
busy-body momma, and she begins to chastise the persperation on his
face:  "You just had a bath. What have you been doing?"

and zooey says, "i'm late now, Fatty. C'mon. One side." and Bessie
follows him still nagging about the perspiration. 

It's a great little passage because the reference to her rotund waist is
a term of endearment that could only be understood between the two of
them.
