I don't know if anyone wrote this already, but a "sanitarium"  was a place
where, in the early part of the century, TB sufferers would be placed. 
This happened to many a great writer - such as Eugene O'Neil, this being
where he first was inspired to write plays instead of poetry.  In these
"sanitariums" people would often be dramatically changed, mentally and
physically, due to their seclusion from the world; to respond to their
changes many sanitariums would have psychiatrists avaliable.
