Wonderful metaphor for the (sometimes projected) prose of JDS....  He, more
than any author I can think of, knew how to 'hit 'em in the back row'--which
is now, I guess, an almost entirely unnecessary skill in the electronified
theatre, where audio amplification devices are concealed under actors'
wigs....  (Does this bother any other old fogey but me?)
