I for one would like to know more about Salinger's time as entertainment co-ordinator on a cruise ship, which seems to have influenced a number of his early pieces - most obviously, `Teddy', but also the idea of the Glass family as vaudevillians and entertainers of a borderline tawdry sort. Not to forget it was the summer he had a crush on the actress Joan Caulfield and apparently had a friend on the cruise ship named Holden. But I do also agree with you Will - you never get the sense that Salinger is speaking from the wings, do you?
