Funny you should mention that - my sole academic concession to JDS while I was at school was in my major religion assignment (I got full marks for it by the way (: ) which was on the interrelation and influence of the works of Buddha on Salinger's writings. They're pretty convincing, there's some quite spooky parallels, especially when you know that Salinger was very much into the works of Sri Ramakrishna at the time he wrote TCIR (not to mention the many influences later on).
