there are a several moments in catcher when holden expresses his desires for the future. the ones that stick out in my memory are, firstly, the part about the little kids and the cliff, and secondly, when he says he wants to move to the middle of a forest with a deafmute girl. two passages that i've read recently have stuck out in *my* mind as what *i'd* like to be 'when i grow up'. firstly, the part in harper lee's 'to kill a mocking bird', when dill talks about being a new kind of clown. one who 'stands in the middle of the ring and laughs at all the folks'. secondly, a passage i read in a magazine, describing a protest for housing for immigrants to france. 'a briefly tense and interesting but eventually calm and tedious stand-off ensues. one luxuriantly bearded protester, dressed as a shepherd and carrying a toy donkey over one shoulder, waltzes along the french police blockade with a ghetto blaster playing 'if i was a rich man'. the police ignore him. when i speak to him, he ignores me. apparently he's an itinerant fruitcake who turns up at these things.' so the next time someone asks what i intend on doing with the rest of my life, i'll tell them that i want to be an itinerant deafmute laughing clown who turns up at civil rights protests on cliff tops. just a thought. :helena -- Ed Fetish [ http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Bungalow/5705 ]
