All I can say is I empathize with you.  One idea behind a lot of eastern
philosophies is  a recognition that words fail in an attempt to convey
the most important truths, and that we don't understand until we stop
speaking.  

But to reach that point I think we have to go through a speaking process.
 I think your English teacher may be trying to skip some steps.  Or
expecting you to.
