this list really needs a faq.

i am personally willing to take on the site design, maintenance, upkeep and
administration, if those of you who have been on the list longer, or are more
academic/knowledgeable about salinger write the actual answers and mail them to
me. (volunteers can email me off the list)

topics i would like to see addressed include seymour's suicide, franny
pregnant?, salinger and zen, and all the chestnuts that have been cropping up
repeatedly on the list.

this is not intended to shut down discussion about certain topics, but to avoid
repetition. the aim would be to aid the evolution of arguments on the list. ie,
if you had this question and looked in the faq, it would tell you what had
already been discussed on the topic and you could add a new angle or idea.
also, please note that the archives of this list since june 1997 are located at
http://www.nyu.edu/acf/staff/oconnort/JDS/

listmaster tim has made a lovely and beautifully helpful searchable archive in
which you can look for any previous discussion on a topic you find interesting.

perhaps the faq could include some posting gudelines regarding use of quoted
material in
replies, lurking for a few days prior to posting, etc. (i know the digest
incident wasn't dellera's fault. and thank you for apologising.)

if anyone is restriced to email access, or doesn't have a web browser, please
say so, and i will try and help by emailing you what you want.

if my tone is a bit harsh forgive me. i know i don't contribute an awful lot to
the list, and i'm aware that many of my suggestions are already in practice.
but i *do* read every single digest, and compared to many of the other lists
that i have been on the level of repetition and poor netiquette is quite high.
i think this is mostly becasue many subscribers are students who go home for
the holidays and never resubscribe, etc. but whatever the reason, i think the
guidelines for the list should be made very clear to new users, and in the long
run it helps us all. the list becomes less repetpetpetitive, new users feel
more confident with all the resources at their fingertips, and the amount of
clueless posts and trivial flames will drop.
