i agree with tim that 'franny' can get preachy, but
the writing is so good that i believe in her as a real
character. the ego question needs to keep 'zooey' in
mind. (and speaking of real characters vs. mouth
pieces, i recall that margaret salinger said that
zooey most closely approximated her father--she
recalls hearing many of zooey's speeches as she was
growing up.)
