Just wanted to post this; not that I necessary agree with it. (I would perhaps substitute *misdirection* for "total cessation".) In a June 26, 1965 letter, Louise Bogan refers to William Maxwell's [New Yorker editor, New Yorker writer, and author of the 1951 Book of the Month Club essay on JDS] opinion of the newly published "Hapworth": "The Salinger is a disaster. B. Maxwell came to call, and rather deplored its total cessation of talent." Ouch. --Bruce
