For what it's worth, I found the Both Parties Concerned
a very much stronger piece than the Last Furlough story.
Whatever about the slightly grating vernacular tone, it was
- unlike the other yarn - all of a piece emotionally &
(for once, in Salinger) the unstated elements acquired all
the more menace by remaining below the water line.
