I guess I didn't explain myself adequately.
Sybil runs away without looking back (returning to life), the lady in the
elevator runs away without looking back, and Muriel isn't even looking.
She's asleep.
In the Greek myth, the journey is from death to life, foiled by a look.
In "Bananafish," the journey is from life to death, aided by no look.
There's nothing to keep him there. Muriel isn't singing death songs so
that Hades will loose his grip upon her husband.
Another thing: the feet. Hermes, the god who guides Orpheus and Eurydice
from the underworld in the original myth, is closely associated with his
winged feet.
Do you see?
Regards,
Cecilia.
