Ellen, thanks for your post. Even though I discovered Salinger when I was in my teens, I always disliked Holden. (This feels a lot like sacrilege.) He was never a character I wanted to embrace. He reminded me of those boys in school who would be rude or disdainful toward you in class and then try to maul you when you were alone. Maybe your English teacher meant that he was uncomfortable with Holden and maybe your minds makes him feel uncomfortable too? I was never a Holden. No one ever accused me of being like him. But I was a Franny when I was fourteen. And as I've said here before, I'm rapidly becoming a Bessie as my son grows up. ( He turned five on 9/9/99). Ellen, I wanted to ask you a question. I promise I am not trying to be mean or deliberately provocative but I really want to know if you are deliberately misspelling words in your post. I ask this because your post had quite original spelling but you also used apostrophes correctly. I'm such a boring internet player that I use punctuation, etc. I know that it is not "proper" net etiquette but I cannot free myself of grade 8 English lessons! You are obviously smart if you get 98 on your English papers. Thanks, I hope I am not offending you, Lesley
