Could be wrong, but I don't think Seymour *gave* his haikus to Muriel. As
the widow, she would legally own them, though of course Buddy can play
editor. Can't imagine S. showing them to M. to read. (Then again, can't
imagine S. giving M. Rilke or any book of poetry.) As it was, the death
poem on the hotel blotter wasn't even readable to Muriel: it was written in
Japanese. [Oddly enough, in SAI, Buddy says written in Japanese; in
"Zooey", in his letter to Zooey, he quotes the poem in English with line
breaks, with no mention of it being a translation. As if 2 years later, in
SAI, JDS realizes it aint that great a poem, and attempts to skirt the
issue by now claiming it is a translation (and of course the real poetry has
been lost in such an endeavor).]
