At first, I found my head nodding yes to "Scottie's idea of good
writing" because after all, who else can he be? In other words, we
all have the privilege of our individual taste. But then I found
myself agreeing with John mostly because many of the books I
struggled with in grad school have become important parts of what I
think I know. I don't think I can go as far as claiming Scottie's
idea are "more like laziness than aesthetics" because I think it's
the job of authors to create writing that will be read and when we
resist writing it is not either the author's shortcomings or the
reader's but both.
