if salinger had *not* written 'the catcher', i don't
think he would be considered 'a high school writer'.
the other 3 books, i think, aren't very accessible to
adolescents. and i wonder how many high schoolers
would discover these books.
on the other hand, oddly enough, if salinger had *not*
written 'the catcher', i don't think any literary
critics would be writing about his work. (excepting,
perhaps, alsen.)
unless the vault reveals some startling stuff, i think
salinger's future 'worth' will eventually be reduced
to one book: 'the catcher'.
but, personally, of the 4 books i would first jettison
'the catcher'; then '9 stories'; then 'franny &
zooey'. 'raise high & seymour' is, hands down, my
favorite volume.
