Re: au revoir to Scottie

Scottie, I certainly understood your joke. My rather black-humoured friends
and I tend to use the same sort of insults to show affection. For a select
few of us, using these derogatory, hate-filled terms takes the edge off of
hearing them said -- sincerely, no less -- in the high school halls every
day. Probably the prime example of this is the theatre group I'm a part of,
many members of which refer to themselves as "theatre fags,"
self-deprecatingly. I don't believe the guild that I'm in to be bigoted in
any way. In fact, we performed the Tectonic Theatre Project's play, "The
Laramie Project," not even two years ago. We're all far too aware of the
serious issues surrounding such hate, and a criticism of us as hate-filled,
I'm sure, would cause scoffs throughout the group. For our particular
company, it's a common way to mock the hate of others to the point of
absurdity.

Please forgive me if I'm assuming too much here, being fairly new to the
group, but I haven't seen any such recurring joke here. As far as my
personal circumstances go, our jokes are only perpetrated around people
that are in on it. While I must admit that I, myself, appreciated the
humour in your post, others might not have been clear of your speech's
intent. Perhaps, in the future, keeping these sort of jokes -- offensive to
many -- to a private e-mail would be a diplomatic solution.

All that circulated in my mind before I really understood the intent of your
joke was "Down at the Dinghy." We have to make sure that our society
doesn't continue resorting to the sort of behavior that Boo Boo's family
faced.
