<< After waiting nearly six months to see this movie, I was surprised to
find out that it was beyond any preconception I had of how wonderful and
beautiful a movie could be. I have seen it three times, and each time
people have either gotten up and left the theater (quite loudly) or just
sat there and (believe it or not) played Tetris Jr. Oh well. The
emotions evoked from me transcended the idiots.
The third time I saw it, I counted around twenty appearances of "82," or
some variation thereof.
It is extremely pleasing to know that there are still directors out
there (like Paul Thomas Anderson) that can create such works of beauty.
Magnolia was a bright ray of sunshine breaking through the otherwise
cloudy modern American cinematic trends.
Truly one of the best films I have ever had the privilege to witness. >>
I couldn't agree with you any more. I just got back from my third
viewing, incidentally. And I'm noticing more each time. Did you see
the "Exodus 8:2" sticker in the window of Solomon&Solomon? That the
number beneath the arrested woman's face in her mugshot was something to
the effect of 82 0 82 0 82 0 82 0 82 0?
Unfortunately, the audiences I've seen it with haven't been much better
than you describe. One woman actually left the theatre louding
proclaiming her disdain for filmmakers who waste time and money merely
to "pollute the world." I don't think this movie is for the masses.
But an extraordinary film. There's so much to it, you have to take a
deep breath to take it all in - like Moby Dick.
Do you understand the significance of the FreeMasonry? I noticed it
popping up in a number of places. And what do you make of the title?
Did you notice that the name of one of the streets towards the end of
the film is "Magnolia" and that nobody ever crosses it (they all turn or
make U-turns)?
Absolutely beautiful. I called Frank "TJ" Mackey's Seduce and Destroy
hotline (1-877-TAME-HER). And guess what: Tom Cruise's recording from
the movie is actually there! Give it a call before it disappears.
Oh, and I read somewhere that Paul Thomas Anderson was dating Fiona
Apple, and she was in the credits for a number of things (the paintings
in Claudia's apartment for one thing). And at the end of the credits,
it says beneath the title: "for fa and ea"
I figure fa is Fiona Apple, but ea?
Incredible movie.
