I'd say he was of the "same fell stock" etc. But I'd also say he was driven.
Shakespeare is pretty interesting in that his characters are both acted upon
and free to choose. The last person I really looked at closely was Iago, and
even though he worked the hardest to distance himself from his society, he
still defined himself so entirely in terms of his relationship to others that
he felt compelled to ruin other people's lives in order to feel good about
himself.
I would bet that Shylock had something similar going on in his mind. But,
it's been awhile since I've read the play.
Keep this up and you're gonna make me reread it :)
