The English language, like all other living languages, constantly
changes. The split infinitive, for instance, has nearly completed its
diabolical assault on proper usage. The history of "loan" is itself
torrid, to say the least, and no decent listserve member would dare
its slopes, which are as gorey as they are steep. But currently,
standard academic English in America distinguishes between "loan" and
"lend" based on their classifications as separate parts of
speech.
