"Freshmen" (called freshers --sp?-- in England) are university
students who have to read _Hamlet_ in their composition courses, but
who don't want to, and therefore usually do not. "Sophomores" are
university students who were supposed to have read _Hamlet_ in their
first year, but who didn't, and who consequently frustrate English lit
survey teachers who themselves proceed under the assumption that their
sophomore students have read _Hamlet_ and are capable of processing
basic literary allusions.
Becky's AP teacher is to be very somberly commended. Would all my
students had nourished themselves at her table.
