Subject: any Jews?

If, as seems to be the case, Lucy lives in Bristol
I'm truly baffled by her statement that she has never
met a Jew.
My God, in Bristol you can't move for Jews.
They're everywhere. The chaps - at least, the ones
without the funny hats & wringlets - all look like
Woody Allen & the girls like Elizabeth Taylor.
When I was there, the Mayor & the municipal council
were all Jews. As well as the head of the Police Authority
& the chairman of the magistrates. The Bristol orchestras
are Jewish to a man & three quarters of the University
chairs are held by Jews. The same percentage applies
to the lawyers & the doctors. Also the editors
& the social workers.
In the restaurants you can order what you like but
all you ever get is bagels & lox. And terrific black
coffee.
Whenever I sat down on a park bench in Bristol
I was immediately accosted by a bunch of fellows
trying to inveigle me into arguments about the second
book of Kings; or wanting to hear my memories
of Anna Freud; or demanding a subscription to
the Israeli Defence Force.
It's a wonderful town. But I really don't get it, Lucy.
Do you live there at all?
Scottie B.
