hi everyone
i was here a long time ago but i missed you all so much i had to
return. anyway i'm writing a 6000 word essay on salinger's portrayal
of children, to discuss the hows, whats and whys of his treatment of
the little tikes. I'll be talking in detail about the glass family
since we often see them as kids anyway and one angle ill be looking
at is that of the outcast, and i see their upbringing as crucial etc.
etc.
anyway, when i have more time on my hands ill write more, and if you
guys are still discussing topics such as salinger's favourite
baseball team and what sauce was in franny's uneaten chicken sandwich
then i hope youll also have the time to bounce ideas back and,
basically, tell me the Answer. I already have plenty of my own ideas,
the best ones robbed from critics, but id like to discuss my
opinions and theories on salinger's interest in, use of, and
reasons for his kids with anyone whos interested.
you have been warned.
alex
PS. But first of all, does ANYONE buy in to the 'final moral' at
the end of 'zooey' (the fat lady)? because i dont, not for one
second. its a dirty cop- out. firstly, its just a neatly worded way
of saying, "sure, love everyone. but from a distance. theyre all
still stupid. just accept them with a smile and tell yourself you
love them cos theyre all jesus christ. but dont interact"
secondly if salinger really believed it then what the hell is he
doing avoiding all humanity? especially since hes a writer which id
think carries certain public responsibilities. his blanket love which
he closes with in zooey is all just a lot of lip service which he
doesnt go in for. he doesnt practise what he preaches.
