Everytime a musician, artist, or whatever dies there
does seem to be a greater interest in the person. It's
sad, but it seems to be the way things go in this
crazy world. As for the age of the writers, I'm only
19 and I really don't think age has anything to do
with it. This obsession with dead artists has been
around forever: james dean, marilyn monroe, jack
kerouac, tupac shakur, notorious B.I.G., etc.. etc...
People tend to look(I admit I do it too sometimes) to
these people as martyrs. Something pure in a world
that's lost it's innocence. I saw a documentary
narrated by Kurt Loder(one of the few people at MTV i
admire). I've read many interviews and articles on
Kurt Loder and I'm constantly amazed at how
intelligent he is and how often he is underrated as
simply an MTV correspondant. Anyway, he told about the
feeling Nirvana created when they did the "Unplugged"
set on MTV. Kurt Cobain grew up with a strong punk
rock work ethic; corporations are bad, making music
just to get rich is wrong, etc .. etc.. In fact, I'd
say J.D. Salinger in his own weird way is one of the
earlier punk rockers with his knocking of movies,
actors, and "being a phony". For anyone who knows
anything about punk rock(not talking about Suger Ray,
Offspring, or any of that), it's based on a lot of
ideals. It's about taking the money away from the big
corporations and using it to fuel the underground,
underrepresented bands. Unfortunately, as bands like
NOFX, Bad Religion, and others began to get some clout
the punk rock scene was suddenly thrown into the
mainstream light and spawned bands like Greenday,
Offspring, and Sugar Ray. A lot of punkers hate NOFX
because they're so popular, but I think it's unfair to
hate a band like that just because they suddenly get
popular. Because they've stayed true to their ideals.
They've turned down major record labels and stayed
faithful to Fat Wreckords and Epitaph. Personally, I'm
more into the ramones, clash, vindictives, screeching
weasel, and others, but I'm using NOFX and Bad Relgion
as examples because they're more well known and
established in the punk community. Now, Kurt Cobain
wasnt a punk rocker in the sense that he was always
experimenting, made music videos, and got extremely
famous, but he did try to carry those ideals with him.
You also have to think what was on the top forty
before Nirvana came out: stuff like michael jackson
and a lot of corporation generated crap. Just some thoughts:)
