Sorry if I was less than clear. It was "safety orange" (which is the
predominant color you'll see at the LL Bean site and which is quite
popular for hunting gear) that I think of as relatively new. The book
quite clearly says it's a red hat:
It was this red hunting hat, with one of those very,
very long peaks.
So, your hat-making instinct was dead-on.
I myself think of the classic old-style hunting cap as red-and-black
checks, but I have no idea where that idea originates.
