My english teacher in high school used to tell us this story about a
college literature class discussing symbolism in a certain work.

Unbeknownst to them, the author of the work was sitting in on the class
in the back of the classroom.  When they said that a hat or something
symbolized something, he raised his hand and started to argue with them
and the class would not give in.

Finally, he stood up and said, "I wrote the damn story, I think I should
know what's symbolic and what's not."

And they looked at him for a minute, and renewed the discussion on how
the hat was symbolic.
