Hey people, I'm a quite fresh reader of this list, which I think is great, but now I will finally come forward to ask you guys some questions. I'm working on a translation of "For Esm=E9..." from English into Swedish. (It's a special project for school, although still pretty amateurish.) The rough translation is now finished, but there are a few things I've just not been able to work out, and I'd appreciate some help on these points. Some of them are, I'm fully aware of, not really related as much to Salinger as to linguistics, but I thought that you know this text better than anyone else. Alright, here we go: 1. When X describes Esm=E9 as he's watching her in the choir he says her eye= s could have counted the house. What exactly does he mean by this? I can't find it anywhere in my idiomatic dictionaries.=20 2. When X offers Esm=E9 some cinnamon toast, she says 'No thank you. I eat like a bird, actually'. Is this some special expression or does she simply want to point out that she doesn't really eat that much? 3. When talking about the importance of humor, X reacts to Esm=E9's reply by quickly changing the horses. Again my idiomatic dictionaries fails to answer to my needs. Of course I have a hint of what it is, but I would need a further explanation to it for finding the best words in Swedish for it. 4. What's an APO number? 5. What's the ETO? 6. Where - in which book - can I find Dostoevsky's quotation: 'Fathers and teachers, I ponder "What is hell?" I maintain that it is the suffering of being unable to love'. When it comes to quotations I'm supposed to find the already accepted Swedish translation. 7. Finally, if someone has got anything to say to the expression 'with all one's faculties intact', I'd very much welcome it. That's really a tough one to dress up in Swedish words. I've got about four different alternatives, some better than others. Hey Rick, those previous posts on characterization in "For Esm=E9..." you du= g out for Hilary - I'd be really greatful if you could please send them off to me as well.=20 I think that's all. I might return if anything else comes up.=20 Thanks. /Mirjam=20 =20
