Ah, Mirjam, you DO have a job ahead of you. A lot of those expressions are not only distinctly American, but probably distinctly post WW 2 American, probably New York-ese. Yeah, eating like a bird hasn't changed -- that means eating lightly. The Faculties being intact thing...hmmm. That's the most powerful line in the story and it does need special attention. It is a reference to something Esme said in her letter, I believe, about coming through the war with his faculties intact. There's something perfect about his spelling it out, though, and I don't know what. I just know that it is. I think it should be remotely related to child speak in some ways. I'm not sure.
