You Nabokovians will all be very unhappy to know that here in Australia `Lolita' has been turned into a bonafide political hot potato. Quietly and relatively without fuss the movie was passed by the Australian censors after being watched by umpteen panels of experts. However, the current government, knowing that it has to win a notoriously conservative independent member of parliament's vote over a completely different issue, has now come out bleating about how `Lolita' must be stopped and it's revolting and it's disgusting, etc etc - basically kissing his rear end by being righteous. Half those senators would never have even heard about the movie much less self-righteously demand its banning had there not been some political incentive for them to do so. Sigh.
